Driving Change
The UPS Approach to Business
Driving Change provides a fascinating look under the hood of UPS, where readers can learn about the company's dynamic growth from a bicycle messenger company into an enabler of global commerce. Here's an excerpt:
The Strike
Kelly himself firmly believed that if UPS attacked the Teamsters, it was simply devouring its own—something he believed made no sense from a long-term, reputational point of view. Drivers had always been the lifeblood and the public face of UPS. He and the rest of the management team decided that it didn’t want to defend the company in the news media at the expense of the rank-and-file UPS driver or loader. “If you were going to vilify the UPS driver, you were vilifying UPS,” Kelly says, “and that was something we could not do. The drivers had nothing to do with that strike. If they had been allowed to vote there never would have been a strike.”
