Worldport – An Out of This World Hub

Featuring the latest technology and state-of-the-art equipment, Worldport is the center of UPS air services. With nearly four million square feet under one roof, 122 miles of high-speed conveyors (long enough to stretch from Louisville to Indianapolis) and a database that handles 59 million transactions per hour, things are always on the move – literally!

The sorting capacity at Worldport is nothing short of amazing, and can accommodate 304,000 packages per hour – about 140 per second.

Meteorologists Wear Brown, Too

In addition to pilots, flight crews, and mechanics, UPS employs meteorologists to provide around-the-clock coverage. The meteorology department was formed in 1994, when forecasts called for a dusting of snow, but a storm dumped 16 inches on Louisville.

UPS meteorologists have also developed an innovative fog forecasting technique since many flights land in foggy early morning hours, and create contingency plans to avoid weather-related delays so deliveries are made on time. They even share techniques with the National Weather Service!
