An Extraordinary JourneyAll Featured Stories 1 | 2Honored Guests As part of its Centennial celebration in Seattle, UPS recognized 100 employees from around the world who consistently demonstrate service excellence in their everyday work. Employees were selected for their accomplishments in the areas of community service, safety, customer service, and volume development. These UPSers were invited to take part in the 100th anniversary celebration in Seattle—several of whom even shared their experiences through periodic written, audio, and video updates and video diaries on UPSers.com (employee intranet). “UPS has started the next 100 years,” said Mike Millaway, a UPS FreightSM St. Louis City Driver who was one of the selected 100 employees in his UPSers.com “blog” entry. “The receptions, dinners, tours, pictures taken, and speeches given; the inspiration and motivation of the Casey Evening; and the school and the playground that have been given a facelift—all wonderful ways to celebrate the UPS Centennial. I am proud to be a part of it all and happy to have been selected to attend.” Celebrating Service to Others As UPSers so often do, Conference participants dedicated time to give back to the community during the Centennial celebration. And UPSers, clad in UPS t-shirts, gave that something extra and completed a project—refurbishing Brighton Playfield—ahead of schedule. The playfield is shared by the Aki Kurose Middle School. UPSers planted, painted, landscaped, shoveled gravel, and made general improvements to the facility and playground, giving the school a needed facelift before students began their new school year. “We finished the community project earlier than expected, but when you’ve got this many people working together, it doesn’t take long to do some of the things we did,” says Rick Wilson, Missouri District Package Car Driver and one of the 100 employees attending the celebration in Seattle. “People were driving by blowing their horns and shouting thanks to us for the job we were doing.” A Piece of History When UPSers were given a commemorative ingot—a three-inch metal bar—on August
28, 2007, in honor of the company’s Centennial, they were literally given a piece of history.
