Big Green

Ah, July. Warmer days, baseball games, and in Atlanta, home of UPS’s global headquarters, a fair share of “smog alert” days. So, what is UPS doing to help?

Sustainablility-Report CoverUPS and the Environment
When it comes to sustainability and the environment, UPS’s efforts stretch back to the 1930s, and continue strongly today. This July marks the publication of UPS’s 4th annual Corporate Sustainability Report, which tracks UPS’s yearly progress to a variety of centennial year sustainability goals. The first report was published in 2003, and the 2007 centennial-year report will be published in July 2008.

Just what is sustainability? Broadly, it has to do with operating a business with the needs of the global community in mind, using practices that provide for current needs without compromising our collective future. The beginning of UPS’s own “sustainability statement” reads as follows:

“At UPS, we believe our business success depends upon balancing economic, social and environmental objectives.
UPS provides optimal service and value to our customers by striving for the highest operational efficiencies and minimizing impact to the environment.”
You can read the rest of the statement here (in English) at www.sustainability.ups.com, a website devoted entirely to UPS’s progress towards its sustainability goals.

Now, when you think of sustainability and a focus on all things green, you might not immediately think of UPS. But a lot of people do. In fact, in FORTUNE’s 2007 “America’s Most Admired” report in the “most socially responsible company” category, UPS ranked #2 overall and #1 among shipping companies.

The statistical information included here was current at the time it was published in 2007. To see more recent statistics, visit our pressroom.
