Big Green
Green in the Air
Our ground fleet isn’t the only place where we’re experimenting with new technologies to reduce fuel consumption and save money. When you operate the world’s 8th-largest airline, you also look to the sky with sustainability in mind. While we don’t have any plans to fly electric airplanes in the near future, we are constantly testing ways to save fuel with the fleet we have.
One of these seems like a no-brainer: while we’re most comfortable using all engines in flight, our planes use only one engine to taxi on the ground, saving fuel. Another fuel-saving measure that seems simple, but is still being evaluated, is continuous descent approach, or CDA. Instead of stepping down from one altitude to the next, which is the standard, the CDA technique has planes glide down using idle power, which burns less fuel (and is a good deal less noisy!). UPS is working with the FAA to gain operational approvals to implement CDA on more routes, soon. Interested in what else we’re doing to make our “browntails” greener? You can read about even more conservation efforts at UPS Airlines here.
