It’s All About the People

Every August 28th, UPSers all around the world – now over 420,000 of them, in over 200 countries The Founders and territories - celebrate Founders’ Day, the day when two young men founded the American Messenger Company, which grew to become UPS. We call it “Founders’ Day” because it’s less a celebration of a company than it is a celebration of the people who have worked tirelessly to build that company, and have contributed to our shared success throughout the years. Founders’ Day marks UPS’s anniversary, yes, but it also recognizes, each year, the vision of Jim Casey, George Casey, Evert McCabe, and Charlie Soderstrom, their legacy, and the culture we share with them and all the UPSers who came after them.

As Jim said, and as written in our policy book, “We build our organization around people.” So, this August 28th, on our 100th anniversary, we’re celebrating the people of UPS who make it happen every day: the drivers, the loaders, the lawyers, the sorters, the IT guys, the folks in Iowa and the folks in India, the pilots, the mechanics, the meteorologists, the clerks and customer service reps and everyone in between; all UPSers past and present all around the world. Because really, it’s all about the people.

In the Beginning

When Jim Casey and Claude Ryan borrowed $100 to start a messenger service, it's unlikely that they knew they were creating a business that would become the world's leading package delivery company. They merged the business with Evert McCabe, who ran a competing delivery service, to form American Messenger Company, a service that delivered messages across Seattle.

After serving as one of the company's original messengers, Jim's brother George joined the company's leadership. Adding to the group was Charlie Soderstrom, sharing his expert knowledge about cars. This core team led the fledgling business through its earliest days and established its initial path.
